This is Robert Earl Hughes. Does he look familiar?

In the late 1950's, he weighed more than 1,000 pounds. During his lifetime, he was considered an anomaly.

Robert held the Guinness Book of World Records crown as the world's fattest man for several decades.[1] He was considered a huge outlier of normal human size and weight. The average person just didn't weigh as much as Robert.

These days, if you enter your local walmart store, you will see at least 20 people who are, at best, closing in on Robert's massive poundage.

Robert's Cause

Hughes's extreme weight was attributed to a ruptured thyroid gland, unlike the soda-swilling, cheap snack-eating, fast food-guzzling, potato chip-wolfing, pizza-gobbling, gas station food-stuffing, non-vegetable-consuming, voracious and lazy slobs of today.

He didn't even have a recorded case of diabetes. In fact, he died from complications after contracting measles. At the time of his fat death, he was still able to walk, unaided,[2] around his groaning floorboards.

The Rest Of You Fatties

According to the World Health Organization...[3]

The fundamental cause of obesity and overweight is an energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended. Globally, there has been:

  • An increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in fat and sugars.
  • An increase in physical inactivity due to the increasingly sedentary nature of many forms of work, changing modes of transportation, and increasing urbanization.

This is fair enough. It gives us a succint and adroit answer. Clever enough that most people do not look beyond this information and try to discover the actual cause behind the uptick in obesity.

Why would they? It is easy to just plant the blame on human weakness and move on. "Of course she is fat, she dumps cheese on everything she eats" is a good example of how most people react to witnessing a fat person.

Additionally, it is easy to ignore some inconvenient factors when discussing physical activity. In today's world, the idea of "work" and even obligations are twisted out of shape. Why toil when there is a handout? It has been an idea fostered by our own leaders for years, and only a few people have questioned it.
