Why

Mustard (Brassica nigra) is a plant rich in glucosinolates, substances that give it its distinctive spicy and burning taste. These components are very irritating and can cause some side effects in sensitive individuals.

Eating mustard seeds, leaves, or paste is generally safe when consumed in amounts typically found in foods. However, consuming large amounts or applying it directly to the skin may cause skin and GI irritation. Uncooked mustard seeds and leaves contain a significant amount of goitrogens which can interfere with the normal function of your thyroid. People with impaired thyroid function need to soak, boil, or cook mustard seeds and leaves before eating them to reduce the content of goitrogens.

Mustard has components that stimulate gastric nerve, which in some people can cause dizziness, vomiting and digestive discomfort.

Stomach Pain

Mustard has components that irritate the mucous membranes of the digestive tract and can cause severe stomach pain.

Diarrhea

Laxative irritant properties of this seed have laxative effect in some cases. Depending on the dose and individual tolerance, it can cause diarrhea.

Intestinal Disease

In people suffering from intestinal diseases, such as Crohn's disease or irritable colon, mustard can trigger an outbreak.

Drug Interaction

Mustard can interact with other drugs. Although there is not much information available on the matter, mustard is likely to interact with antithrombotic drugs and drugs for hypertension. Consult your doctor before taking mustard if you are on any medication.

Mustard (the condiment), is NOT Mustard Gas (the aerosolized weapon). For clarification, Mustard poisoning happens when you are exposed to a harmful chemical called mustard gas. The chemical smells like garlic or onions. It comes in a liquid or an aerosol. An aerosol is a spray with tiny droplets of liquid. Mustard gas is used as a weapon. It may be sprayed onto people, or onto a surface that people will touch. Examples are handrails, handles, plants, and soil.
