This article isn't really about Canada. There is enough hate on the internet to take care of Canada without me having to add to it. No, this article is about a small bit of bullshit, perpetrated by Canadian authorities, that I overheard while watching a video.

As a small disclaimer, I would like to point out that my own government pulls this sort of shit all the time and is no better than the government discussed in this article.

The Story

Greg and Katie

I watch "This Off Grid Life" occasionally. The channel centers around 2 young people who are building an off grid cabin on a mountain in the Canadian wilderness. To say they are remote is an understatement. At times, they have to bulldoze their own roads, just so they can get around.

The latest update involves gathering water for the cabin in the dead of winter. They have several ways of obtaining water, but during cold weather, they use a pump to fill an IBC tote from a nearby stream.

Normally, they would drive their pickup truck to the stream and do their business. On days where there is a lot of snow, they use that same pickup truck to plow the road on the way to the stream. They have been doing this for years.

Recently, the couple was told by the Authorities to stop plowing. Yep, that's Canada for you: An authoritarian regime bent on quashing any freedom, self-reliance, and ingenuity.

Of course, being told that you are not allowed to do a normal everyday jobs by your own government is going to have some drastic changes. To put a finer point on it, being told not to plow snow, on a mountain, in the northern reaches of Canada, during winter, is about as ridiculous as things can be. And being told these things at gunpoint makes it that much more ridiculous/

Below, find a list of results that this governmental demand will impose on these people:

  • They cannot leave the mountain when there is heavy snow
  • They cannot return to their home if they are away
  • They cannot obtain water in their normal fashion
  • Forced reliance on the government
  • Limiting self reliance
  • Removal of personal freedoms
  • Animosity
  • Demoralization
  • Depression
  • Fear

If you watch the video, Katie mentions that they may just plow their road anyways, but states that she is "scared when lawyers get involved." Holy shit.

Reasons?

Jonathan Wilkinson

What could be the reason why the Canadian Minister of Forestry would tell an off-grid couple to stop plowing roads?

I am sure they are doing it under the guise of "safety" because that seems to be modus operandi of oppressive governments these days.

The real reason, in my mind, is that the Canadian government does not want self-reliant individuals. For over a decade now, the government has been restricting more and more freedoms that the Canadian people used to take for granted. Canada (and to an extent the rest of the western world) wants a slave class. They want people who are depressed, cowed, and wholly dependent on their rulers.
