Good ol' Jimmy Harbaugh was a shitty *ichigan coach who cheated so much, he was given the death penalty by the NCAA.
Show Cause
On August 7, 2024, Harbaugh was given a four-year show-cause from the NCAA which will be enforced between August 7, 2024 and August 6, 2028, after he was found to have committed "unethical conduct" in 2021 by violating NCAA recruitment rules which were enacted during the COVID-19 dead period. The NCAA found Harbaugh's actions so egregious that it added two unusual stipulations to his show-cause. If he gets another collegiate job while the show-cause is in effect, he will be suspended for the first season of his return.[1][2] Even after that suspension ends, Harbaugh will be barred from a number of major head coaching duties, such as taking part in practice, traveling with the team, video study, recruiting, and team meetings.[3] Normally, a show-cause order makes it prohibitively difficult for a coach to return to the collegiate ranks at least for the duration of the show-cause. A school can be penalized merely for hiring a coach with an active show-cause, and can be severely punished if he commits additional violations.[4]
On August 15, 2025, Harbaugh was given an additional 10-year show-cause order that will run consecutively with his previous four-year show-cause order for his role in an illegal scouting and sign-stealing operation that operated at Michigan for several years. His current show-cause runs until 2028, after which the new show-cause will begin.[5] The NCAA harshly criticized Harbaugh for not cooperating with the investigation. As with the 2024 infractions case, it decreed that if Harbaugh returns to the collegiate ranks after 2028, he will be suspended for the first season of his return. The cumulative effect of both show-cause orders will make it prohibitively difficult for Harbaugh to work in the collegiate ranks again until at least the 2038 season.[6]
