I have always loved Obscure Measurements. Humans have, for thousands of years, found ways to measure things because we have this psychotic desire to assess, appraise, size up, codify, evaluate, analyze, inspect, describe, interpret, scrutinize, probe, valuate, survey, determin, rate, allot, quote, compensate, calculate, judge, and gauge the things around us.
Similar to "Rule 34," if there is a thing, we have ways of making up some word to meassure it. Once we have the word, the measurer dudes get busy... So yes, I said we are psychotic about it, and it is true... We even have ten thousand words for "Measurement." It's what we do.
